Mayor Thabo Jacobs Visits Reebone Secondary School, commits to Supporting Learners and Enhancing Parental Involvement
As part of his school outreach programme, the Hon. Mayor Thabo Jacobs visited his former school, Reebone Secondary School in Swartruggens.
The Mayor was warmly welcomed by the school leadership and held a productive engagement with the Principal, Mr. Stungu.
During their discussions, Mr. Stungu shared his growing concerns about the lack of parental involvement—particularly among the parents of Grade 12 learners.
He highlighted that many parents are not actively supporting their children’s education, which hampers both academic performance and discipline. He stressed that his responsibilities as an educator would be greatly eased if parents took a more active role in their children’s academic journey.
Mayor Jacobs acknowledged these challenges and expressed strong support for the school’s efforts. He emphasized that improving educational outcomes is a shared responsibility, and called on the broader community to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of its youth.
As part of his commitment, Mayor Jacobs made several pledges to support the school and its learners. These include:
• The donation of paper and sanitary pads to address immediate learner needs;
• The installation of Wi-Fi at the school to support digital learning;
• The procurement of blazers for underprivileged learners, ensuring they are included and take pride in their appearance.
The Mayor reiterated that education remains a top priority and that collaboration between government, schools, parents, and the community is essential in creating a supportive and successful learning environment.
